Some of the topics discussed include: weak stocks, gold and oil company, FANGMAN turnaround, value stocks in resource/materials sector still struggling despite promise of asset sales.

Ex-FANGMAN/Gold Long Term Ratios

My View – I have repeatedly published long-term charts of FANGMANT stock performance against total NYSE stock market capitalization. The ratio is reversing, reflecting the recent underperformance of the tech sector’s leadership.

Tencent calls off talks of new crackdown as tech cleanup deepens

This Bloomberg article may be of interest to subscribers. Here is a section:

Chinese tech stocks suffered their worst two-day drop since July on renewed fears that Beijing could impose more restrictions on private companies. Marketers pointed to everything from weekend regulatory warnings about scams in the Metaverse – a virtual reality-based social media concept – to unsubstantiated talk of more restrictions on the gaming industry. Tencent is a leader in the development of metaverses.

On Monday, a screenshot detailing alleged new gambling restrictions made waves across the internet in China. But Wang Guanran, an analyst at Citic Securities, said the content was originally published by him last year when regulators held study sessions on gambling regulations.

“I didn’t post anything today,” he said on his WeChat. The screenshot signaled greater scrutiny of violent genres and concepts like anime and religion and player spending limits for loot boxes.

My View – Protests that Tencent does not expect additional restrictions on its core business sectors would be more persuasive if the government did not ask banks to disclose their relationships with Alibaba’s ANT Financial.

Appendix 3: Seriously, what are you talking about? My search results are perfect.

If you think your search results are perfect (without adding Reddit), then you’re probably right. If every person agreed that Google search results were garbage, then Google would already be bankrupt.

It is perhaps more likely that 80% of people think Google is good enough and 20% think Google sucks.

I suspect, however, that the 20% will increase in number.

Appendix 4: *Yawn*, this is the 87th time someone has claimed that Google Search is dying in the last 20 years. It’s a big meme in the SEO world.

“The information about my death is greatly exaggerated” – Google, probably

You’re right, there’s been a new Google bashing article every few months for the past 20 years in a row. It’s probably nothing.

Still, it’s kind of interesting that this short and simple post is now one of the most voted things ever on Hacker News. There must be a lot of people who resonate with that this time around.

Hard to tell if anything significant has changed.

Appendix 5: Random redditor explains it succinctly

u/a_latvian_potato:

I think I understand what this article is trying to say. That’s not to say that Google’s search technology is worse or that people don’t use Google to search. This means that people trust the results displayed by Google less than the discussions about it on Reddit.

For example, if I’m looking to see reviews of the 2022 Honda Civic or whatever, I find myself typing “Honda Civic review reddit” instead of “Honda Civic review”. It’s because I want to see what real people and real enthusiasts (on r/cars or whatever) are talking about the car, rather than the top google results which are actually just paid reviews advertising the car anyway.

While I kinda know the folks at Reddit are just as capable of spouting BS that are completely untrue, I find the discussions more genuine anyway than the corporate talk that the “big websites” have on their articles that Google shows me.

My take – I have also noticed that the quality of search results on Google has deteriorated. Lots of scrolling is required to skip the ads. This is especially true for commercial search terms.

The Graphic Seminar 2022

With rising vaccination rates around the world, the prospect of anti-COVID pills on the horizon, and the promise of dropping travel restrictions, it’s time to start thinking about The Chart seminar venues in 2022 .

Please message if you would like to attend an event next year, along with your preferred location.

At the moment I am considering a late May date for a seminar in London and I am open to other times and locations depending on demand.
